  Recently, an owner in the electromechanical field kept asking me this question, saying that a smoke curtain needs to be added to the commercial atrium and corridor side, and that the project has already been designed this way according to the chief engineer's requirements from the design institute. This caught my attention, and after carefully studying the "New Smoke Regulations", I found that indeed a smoke curtain needs to be added to meet the requirements of this standard. Below, we will explore why this is necessary using an actual project as a model.

  Let's first look at the building information for this project:

  Building information: commercial mall, one basement level (parking), four above-ground levels (commercial). The commercial atrium extends from the first floor to the roof, protruding above the roof. The building height is 23.98m, with a first-floor height of 5.8m, second and third floors at 5.5m each, and a fourth-floor height of 5.6m. The atrium protrudes above the roof, and the fire separation is set at the storefront entrance (this is the premise for the calculation model), using double-layer fire shutters or fire-resistant glass with sprinklers. For convenience in calculation, we take the atrium height as 24m clear height.
